Data Centre Engineer

WHAT YOU’LL DO

As a Data Centre Engineer you will be responsible for data centre operations, locally in China, as well as working with remote technicians to support data centres internationally. As an engineer, you will have the opportunity to combine your knowledge in IT Infrastructure, and customer support with a problem-solving mindset in order to solve business issues and independently work on improvement opportunities. You will be working on projects of all sizes, either as a resource or leading engineer and delivering it from conception all the way to completion. As part of a fast-paced Infrastructure team based in Shanghai, supporting platforms across APAC, you will see the results of your work immediately as this is a hands-on, high impact and high performance role. 

  • You will be in charge of maintaining our APAC data centres, including but not limited to the following:
    • Facilitating installation of cabling, servers and network equipment in Data Centre locations, a mixture of on-site work and remote coordination of smart-hands / service partner personnel
    • Managing power and space including monitoring and capacity planning
    • Maintaining a consistent and clean cable management philosophy
    • Managing spare parts and cabling inventory
    • Break-fix repairs to equipment in the data centre environment, including replacing hard drives/memory/transceivers and other hardware related tasks as required by our server and network teams
    • Assisting with planning equipment moves or new data centre build-outs
    • Getting equipment to and from remote co-locations including packing/shipping
    • Maintaining data centre documentation
  • Working hours will involve a mixture of core business-hours for planning & monitoring, weekends and outside of hours for execution of physical infrastructure changes (with time off during the week)
  • Most work will be within Shanghai, however occasional visits to other locations within Asia Pacific may be required

WHAT YOU'LL NEED

  • Attention to detail within a data centre
  • Ability to identify basic parts of network equipment – SFPs, line cards, chassis
  • Ability to identify basic parts of servers – memory, network card, hard drives, etc..
  • Experience with identifying port locations for specific device manufacturers (Cisco, Arista, Juniper)
  • Knowledge of structured cabling systems using cat 5, cat 6, multi-mode and single-mode fibre
  • Familiarity with both power and communications cabling standards
  • Experience configuring and using cable testers for both fibre and copper to troubleshoot cabling issues
  • Ability to perform basic installation, configuration and troubleshooting on server operating systems
  • Excellent written and verbal communication skills; fluency in English.
  • An understanding of change control processes
  • Strong documentation mentality
  • Strong communication skills (especially with remote engineers whose native language may not be English)
  • Ability to lift 18kg
  • Ability to regularly work on weekends
