The Optiver Foundation. Let’s improve the world.

The Optiver Foundation

As a non-profit organisation we want to tackle some of the most pressing issues facing our planet and its people. Of particular importance to us is how we can use science and technology to solve many of these problems. We understand that meaningful change only happens when those who can have the greatest impact, step forward and take up the gauntlet. With this in mind, we’re proud to launch our foundation and are determined to make a real difference.

Our areas of focus

The environment

Planet earth is the only home we have and we need to do everything in our power to reverse the damage that’s being done to it. Future generations need to look back at this time and say this is when we turned the corner towards recovery. From re-greening to water conservation to reversing the effects of climate change, there’s no end to the good that can be done for the environment. We plan to be involved in all of it.

Every company has a responsibility to create equal opportunities for everyone, regardless of their gender, ethnicity or background. One of the most important aspects of this is access to education. Our people come from the fields of science, technology, engineering and mathematics, as such we’re extremely passionate about these subjects. In many parts of the world, gifted young people are not being given the same opportunities to follow their dreams. We want to help correct this by giving more people the chance to enter these fields of study.

Our activities

To achieve our foundation’s goals, we want to align with projects and partners that share our mission. Organisations that are going to make the greatest impact and are most in need of help. These include – but are not limited to – initiatives, NGOs, charities, and bursaries, both locally and globally.

Project 1: The journey to becoming carbon negative

Climate change is one of the most important issues of our time. If companies don’t lead the change that’s needed, turning the corner becomes extremely difficult. We’ve decided that our first step will be to reverse any impact our operations have had on the environment, with the goal of not only becoming carbon neutral but eventually carbon negative.

We have committed to offsetting, over a period of time, all of the CO2 emissions we’ve created since our founding 35 years ago by responsibly restoring the biodiversity of degraded land in North America, Europe and Australia. This long-term commitment will extend to all our future emissions and is supported by other recycling, energy and waste management initiatives.

Our approach

Giving that grows

We’ve approached our philanthropy the same way we approach how we operate – with a determined focus on optimal performance. It would be easy to donate a set amount of money and move on. But we want our activities to grow exponentially and make a significant impact.

To make this a reality our foundation is financed through an endowment fund. Starting off with an initial capital investment of €35 million. In this way we are able to scale up our efforts every year and ensure the sustainability of every one of our projects.
